Are you working in a private company in India and getting monthly salary with EPF deductions? Then you must know that every month a part of your salary goes into your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account. Your employer also contributes the same amount. Over time, this amount grows and helps you build a retirement fund. But do you know how much money is already deposited in your PF account? If not, you can check your EPF balance in just a few minutes.
With the help of digital tools and services offered by Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), it is now very simple to track your EPF balance online and offline. You don’t need to visit any office or fill long forms. All you need is your UAN (Universal Account Number) and a few clicks or taps on your phone.
In this article, we will guide you in the simplest way on how to check your EPF balance using different methods such as:
- UAN portal
- UMANG app
- SMS
- Missed call
- EPFO app
We will also explain what EPF is, how UAN helps, and what details you can find when checking your PF balance.
What Is EPF and Why Is It Important?
EPF, or Employees’ Provident Fund, is a savings scheme for salaried employees in India. It is managed by EPFO, a government body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The main aim of EPF is to help employees save money for retirement or future needs.
Every month, 12% of your basic salary (plus dearness allowance, if applicable) is deducted and deposited into your EPF account. Your employer also contributes 12%, out of which 8.33% goes to EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) and the rest goes to EPF.
Over the years, this amount earns interest and grows into a good corpus. EPF is tax-free, secure, and highly beneficial for long-term savings.
What Is UAN and Why You Need It to Check EPF Balance?
UAN (Universal Account Number) is a unique 12-digit number given to each EPF member. It stays the same throughout your job life, no matter how many companies you change.
Your UAN links all your PF accounts from different employers under one umbrella. With UAN, you can:
- Check EPF balance
- Download EPF passbook
- Track employer contributions
- Transfer PF from one account to another
- Update KYC details
To check your EPF balance, activating your UAN is compulsory. If you don’t know your UAN, ask your HR or check your salary slip – it is usually mentioned there.
