In India, important documents like Aadhar, Voter ID, Driving License, and PAN cards are essential for various tasks. A PAN card is crucial, especially for financial transactions and income tax processes. Many may not know that minors, too, can have a PAN card, which serves as an identification document and is sometimes required for certain transactions on their behalf. Here’s an easy guide to understand why a PAN card for children under 18 is important, and how to apply online.

Why Do Children Need a PAN Card?

Though a PAN card is typically associated with income and tax, it also functions as a unique identification document. Parents often get a PAN card for their children to streamline procedures, such as:

    • Opening a minor’s bank account
    • Investing in financial schemes in the child’s name
    • Handling inheritance or property matters
    • Using it as identification for school admission processes or other official documentation

By having a PAN card ready for your child, you avoid any future delays and paperwork, as certain formalities are simplified when a PAN card is in place.

What is a Minor PAN Card?

A PAN card issued to children under 18 years is termed a Minor PAN card. When a child turns 18, the Minor PAN card needs to be updated to an Adult PAN card. Until then, a parent or legal guardian’s information is linked to the PAN card, ensuring financial control until the child is of legal age.

Steps to Apply for a Minor PAN Card Online

The PAN application for minors is straightforward and can be done online. Here is a step-by-step guide:

    1. Visit the NSDL Website
Go to the official NSDL website: NSDL PAN Application.
    2. Select Application Type
      • Choose ‘New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ from the options.
      • In the ‘Category’ section, select ‘Individual’ since this is a personal application.
    3. Fill in the Basic Details
      • Enter details such as the child’s full name, date of birth, mobile number, and email ID.
      • Complete the CAPTCHA, and then click ‘Submit’.
      • A unique token number will be displayed. Write it down for reference.
    4. Continue with the PAN Application Form
      • Click on ‘Continue with PAN Application Form’ after noting the token.
      • Opt for ‘Forward application documents physically’ to submit hard copies later.
    5. Provide Aadhaar and Additional Information
      • Enter the last four digits of the child’s Aadhaar number and the name.
      • Fill in additional details like the parent or guardian’s details, income information, and any other required fields.
    6. Complete and Submit
      • Review the form to ensure accuracy.
      • Make the payment of Rs 107 as an application fee.
      • Once submitted, the PAN card will be processed and delivered to the registered address within 10-15 days.

    Key Points to Remember

    • Application Fee: The fee for processing a minor PAN card is Rs 107.
    • Timeframe: It typically takes about 10-15 days for the PAN card to reach your address.
    • Update Upon Turning 18: Once the child turns 18, the PAN card should be updated to reflect their status as an adult. This requires re-submission of documents and verification.

Benefits of Applying for a Minor PAN Card

Securing a PAN card for a child provides long-term convenience and flexibility for various formalities, especially in financial and legal matters. It also acts as a preparation for future needs, ensuring smooth transitions when they turn 18 and begin handling their finances independently.

By following these steps, you can ensure your child has a PAN card, simplifying identification and enabling secure financial actions whenever required.
